Shropshire Master Composters are volunteers who help to encourage waste prevention.  The group was established in 2006 with assistance from WRAPOver 75 volunteers have since graduated from a specialist course which is delivered by Garden Organic with funding and support from Shropshire Council and Veolia Shropshire Ltd

There are volunteers across the county of Shropshire (and Telford and Wrekin).  They aim to encourage composting in their local community.  They attend events a diverse as school assemblies, farmers markets, flower shows, green days, village fetes and music festivals. They have also been involved in environmental education projects, establishing new allotments, setting up community composting schemes and they also offer talks to groups such as the WI, Rotary Societies, allotment clubs – and anyone else who will listen!

Each year we get invited to hundreds of events, far more than we can always attend.  So we are always on the look out for more volunteers to help.  If you are interested in gardening, the environment and particularly composting, and are willing to give some of your time then you could help.   Full training and support is provided.  If you are interested in volunteering or if you would like to book the Master Composters to attend your event, please contact Shropshire Council Waste Management on 01743 255989 or e-mail waste@shropshire.gov.uk

Every household in Shropshire produces over a tonne of waste each year.  Two thirds of this is biodegradable and at least half suitable for home composting.  So quite simply home composting is the single most important thing we can do to be greener with our waste.  By home composting you stop material ever entering the waste stream helping to save money and the environment.
