Darwin's Worms is an environmental education project designed to help primary schools and nurseries in Shropshire to reduce waste to landfill.  The project is delivered by volunteers from the Shropshire Master Composters and has been developed in conjunction with Shropshire Council Waste Management team and the Shropshire Wildlife Trust.

The project was funded by the Darwin Bicentary Fund to help promote the work of Shropshire's most celebrated scientist Charles Darwin who conducted experiments using worms as well as developing the theory of evolution.  It is currently being expanded into Telford and Wrekin Council area too.

Participating schools are given a free Can-o-Worms wormery complete with a teachers pack and a visit from a Master Composter.  The aim is to help them reduce waste but also learn about the history of Darwin, his scientific theories and develop a broader understanding of ecology and the environment and gain a sense of responsibility by looking after a new class room pet.

Over 60 sites across the county are now using wormeries supplied through this scheme, with the first bin going 'live' at Fir Tree Nursery in Shrewsbury during October 2008.
